Mourinho delivers latest Man United injury update ahead of Chelsea trip

Jose Mourinho delivers the latest Manchester United team news ahead of Sunday's trip to Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is hoping Chris Smalling will be fit to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

The England defender was substituted at half-time during the 4-1 Europa League win over Fenerbahce on Thursday night after picking up a minor injury and was replaced by Marcos Rojo at Old Trafford.

It remains to be seen whether Smalling will be passed fit for United’s crunch clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

However, Mourinho delivered the following update to reporters after Thursday’s game.

He told MUTV: “He had a bad muscular feeling. We were 3-0 up so we decided to change. Hopefully he can recover for the weekend.”

The Portuguese coach was also quizzed about the fitness levels of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has not featured for the Red Devils since 10 September.

Mourinho continued: “The situation is that we played with Lingard, with Mata and Martial.

“I am not an Einstein, I don’t know a tactical system to play with four wingers at the same time. He has to work more to get the intensity and the real fitness to play at the high level.

“To have him here tonight on the bench and to give him 15 to 20 minutes, like I did with Memphis, I thought it would be better for him to work the way he did yesterday and much harder, obviously.

“I thought it would be much better for him to work today, like he did in the specific session, than to wait for his chance. But he is ready. He is ready very soon.”

United head to Stamford Bridge looking to return to winning ways after their goalless draw with Liverpool on Monday night.

The Red Devils are currently seventh and five points behind the leaders.
