Liverpool legend: This player has been a godsend for Man United
Phil Thompson talks up the importance of David De Gea in the Manchester United team
Phil Thompson has talked up the importance of David De Gea’s role in the Manchester United team ahead of Monday’s trip to Liverpool in the Premier League.
The shot-stopper has earned a reputation as one of the country’s best goalkeeper since joining the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid.
De Gea was on the verge of signing for Real Madrid towards the end of last summer’s transfer window but the move fell through at the last minute and the Spaniard ended up committing his future to the Premier League club.
The Spain international has been in fine form for United and helped the Red Devils win the FA Cup last season under Louis van Gaal.
And Thompson has talked up the important role De Gea plays in the United team ahead of next week’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Thompson said: “David de Gea is one of their best players, whereas Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet are still battling it out for the number one spot.
“De Gea’s turnaround after not going to Real Madrid has been an absolute godsend for United.”
Manchester United head into the game looking to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Stoke City, when De Gea’s uncharacteristic error led to the visitors’ equaliser at Old Trafford.
