Dietmar Hamann states prediction for Liverpool v Man United
Dietmar Hamann believes Liverpool and Manchester United would settle for a point on Monday night
Dietmar Hamann is backing Liverpool to draw with Manchester United at Anfield on Monday night despite describing Jurgen Klopp’s side as “favourites”.
The Reds have won their last four Premier League games thanks to victories over Leicester City, Chelsea, Hull City and Swansea City.
Liverpool are in fourth place in the table and three points clear of Jose Mourinho’s United side after the Red Devils drew 1-1 with Stoke City last time out.
Former Reds midfielder Hamann believes Liverpool are favourites to win the north-west derby given their start to the 2016-17 Premier League season.
“Liverpool are favourites for Monday’s game and rightly so,” Hamann wrote in his Paddy Power blog.
“United have the edge here in recent years, including that dreadful 1-0 win last season, but so far this season Liverpool have been nothing but impressive.”
However, the former Germany international, who was part of Rafael Benitez’s Champions League-winning side in 2005, believes Liverpool will settle for a draw against the bitter rivals in a game that neither Premier League club can afford to lose.
“I wouldn’t be in a rush backing Liverpool at Evens, as going away from home plays into United’s strengths because of the pace in that squad,” Hamann added.
“The draw at 12/5 is a far more attractive bet. These are the games in which you want to prove yourself. Liverpool away is one that will be getting talked about around Manchester United for months – These are the matches neither team can lose.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp took over the reins in October 2015.
Mourinho, meanwhile, was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
