Paul Merson states prediction for Liverpool v Man United

The former Arsenal midfielder is confident Liverpool will beat Manchester United

Paul Merson is backing Liverpool’s attacking options to prove too much for Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after a run of four successive top-flight victories.

Liverpool have already beaten top-four rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City so far this term, as well as playing out a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

United, meanwhile, have endured a stuttering run of form which has seen Jose Mourinho’s side collect just four points from a possible 12 ahead of the international break.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is tipping Liverpool to ease to a 3-1 win against United at Anfield on Monday night.

“I don’t think Man United will be able to live with Liverpool’s attacking players and if the hosts start quickly they will have too much at Anfield,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“This is a huge game for Man United, though, because I’m predicting Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham all to win, and the gap could grow quickly. All the top teams are capable of stringing six wins together so you don’t want to be playing catch-up this early.

“I’m not sure Jose Mourinho knows his best team yet and he needs to get that sorted. They played well for 20 minutes against Stoke, but for a large part of that game they didn’t look like scoring.

“Considering the way Liverpool press high, I think Man United will struggle to open the game up.”

Liverpool were 3-1 aggregate winners against the Red Devils in their first meeting in Europe earlier this year.

The 18-time English champions were 2-0 winners in the home clash thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge.
