John Aldridge states prediction for Liverpool v West Brom
The Liverpool legend says an early goal will be key for the Reds against West Brom
John Aldridge has warned Liverpool that West Brom could emulate Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds were left frustrated after a goalless draw with their bitter Premier League rivals on Merseyside on Monday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had 65 per cent of the possession but failed to penetrate the United defence throughout the 90 minutes.
When Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho did manage to get a shot on target, United goalkeeper David De Gea produced two world-class saves.
Liverpool failed to beat West Brom last season after a 1-1 draw at Anfield was followed by a 2-2 stalemate at The Hawthorns on the final day of the 2015-16 campaign.
And former Liverpool striker Aldridge is worried West Brom could successfully adopt United’s approach and secure a point at Anfield unless the Reds make an early breakthrough.
“Jurgen Klopp will have a simple message for his players on Saturday: don’t give away any silly fouls,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“We know what West Brom will be like. They earned a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season, and will make life really difficult for us.
“They, like United on Monday, will look to get into the last third and win free-kicks and long throw-ins because their main opportunity to score will be from set-pieces.
“We have to be aware not to gift West Brom such openings. And an early goal will be important in helping us get a grip on the game.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
The Reds were 4-1 winners against Leicester City in their opening home game of the season before a 5-1 victory over Hull City last month.
