Martin Keown delivers verdict on Antonio Conte’s Chelsea defence
The former Arsenal defender explains how Antonio Conte can improve his Chelsea defence
Martin Keown is confident that master tactician Antonio Conte can improve his defence without having to overhaul his Chelsea squad.
The Blues made a perfect start to life under the Italian head coach after successive Premier League victories over West Ham United, Watford and Burnley.
Conte signed Brazil defender David Luiz in a £32m transfer from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the summer window as the Chelsea manager bolstered his defensive options.
The west London side have conceded seven times in three Premier League games since signing Luiz after a 2-2 draw with Swansea City followed by defeats by top-four rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
Former Gunners defender Keown is confident that Conte can improve the Chelsea defence with his current options after reverting to a three-man defence for Saturday afternoon’s 2-0 win against Hull City.
“Against Hull, Antonio went for a back three of Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz — he went back to what he knows best,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“Conte has seen great success using three at the back with Juventus, and I thought he was a great tactician adopting the system with Italy at Euro 2016 with two strikers and a deep-lying midfielder.
“It will be interesting to see how he adapts that system with Chelsea going forwards.”
Chelsea are in seventh place in the Premier League table after their fourth top-flight victory of the 2016-17 season.
The Blues wil host reigning champions Leicester City in their next top-flight game.
