Martin Keown delivers verdict on Arsenal star Mesut Ozil
Martin Keown says Mesut Ozil is benefitting from Alexis Sanchez's new role up front for Arsenal this season
Martin Keown believes that Mesut Ozil is benefitting from Alexis Sanchez’s new striking role this season.
Ozil has been in fine form for the Gunners this term and scored the first hat-trick of his career as Arsenal cruised to a 6-0 win over Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Germany playmaker is widely considered to be one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents since his summer transfer to The Emirates from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
And former Arsenal defender Keown feels that Sanchez’s new position up front this season has allowed the Gunners to get the most out of Ozil this term.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Keown said: “Having Sanchez up front helps him in this regard, as the Chilean’s direct running opens up the space in front of him. Sanchez’s trickery and industry also means he often creates openings himself, allowing Ozil to get into scoring positions instead of just creating chances for other people, as he did with Giroud up front.
“He’s still making chances for the likes of Sanchez and Theo, of course, but he’s also become more ruthless in front of goal.
“Arsenal have often been accused of stepping off the gas once they’re in front, but that wasn’t the case last night. Ludogorets were already beaten early in the second half, but Ozil goes and grabs himself a hat-trick!”
Arsenal are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
The Gunners return to League Cup action on Tuesday night with a home clash against Reading.
