Martin Keown says Man United star cannot compete with Tottenham man
Martin Keown has his say on Wayne Rooney's current situation for both club and country
Martin Keown has told Wayne Rooney that he has no chance of competing with Dele Alli for a midfield spot in the England team.
Rooney has found himself under intense scrutiny in recent weeks after failing to produce consistent performances for both club and country.
The England skipper was dropped to the bench for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia and has struggled to perform for Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.
Rooney now faces a fight on his hands to break back into the England and Manchester United starting line-ups.
And Arsenal legend Keown says that he would always pick Tottenham star Dele Alli ahead of him to play in midfield for England.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Keown said: “There is a role for him [Rooney] to play, as this crop of [England] youngsters will need an experienced head around them during this qualification campaign.
“It’s pleasing to see he’s still on excellent terms with Southgate and that Rooney has handled the situation with great dignity.
“Rooney can’t compete with Alli in the midfield, though. The Tottenham man looks like a middle-distance runner in comparison when he breaks into the box and closes people down.”
Rooney will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action after the international break with a trip to Liverpool next Monday night.
The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Stoke City last time out.
