Martin Keown sends warning to Arsenal fans over new signing
Martin Keown warns Arsenal fans that it is too early to draw conclusions about Shkodran Mustafi
Martin Keown has warned Arsenal fans that it is far too early to judge Shkodran Mustafi as a Gunners player.
The defender was brought to The Emirates by Arsene Wenger at the end of the summer transfer window after both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista suffered injuries in pre-season.
Mustafi has enjoyed a strong start to life at Arsenal and appears to be forming a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the north London side’s defence.
The pair have kept clean sheets against the likes of Chelsea, Burnley and Basel in recent games.
However, although Keown has been impressed by Mustafi’s start to life at Arsenal, he has warned that it is too early to draw conclusions about his ability to perform in the long-run.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, former Arsenal defender Keown said: “It’s far too early to say if they are the best since the Invincibles but it looks like a very good, promising partnership.
“I like the way Mustafi organises himself. He is very good at slowing down his opponent, quick to get into position and reacts to danger quickly. He has a no-nonsense approach. He is also not selfish – he wants to help his partner.
“At 6ft, Mustafi is not the tallest but he has that spring and athleticism. Those attributes help create a better all-round centre back.
“Koscielny has also response well to the challenge. Gabriel and Per Mertsacker are coming back for from injury while Rob Holding is a good prospect, so Koscielny and Mustafi will have to prove they are the No1 pairing.”
