Memphis Depay: This is what’s different about Man United under Jose Mourinho
The Netherlands winger explains why he is feeling more confident under Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho
Memphis Depay says the difference under Jose Mourinho is that the Manchester United hasn’t been afraid to back the winger privately and in the media.
The Netherlands international has struggled badly since his big-money move to Old Trafford in 2015 but has been given sporadic opportunities to impress this season.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has made three substitute appearances in the Premier League amid increased competition for a starting spot at United.
Mourinho named Memphis in his XI for United’s 3-1 victory over League One side Northampton Town last month but the Dutch star has also been limited to appearances from the bench in both of their Europa League games.
However, the former PSV Eindhoven winger feels more confident under Mourinho following the ex Chelsea manager’s appointment as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
“The training sessions are going well, I’m sharp and fit. But that applies to everyone. The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach,” Depay told MetroNieuws – as quoted by 101 Great Goals.
Depay added: “The feeling is different. Mourinho has expressed its confidence in me. Personally, but also in the press.”
Memphis moved to United in a £25m deal from Eredivisie champions PSV in 2015.
However, the Dutch winger scored just twice in the 2015-16 Premier League campaign under his former national team head coach Van Gaal.
