Mesut Ozil: Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi reminds me of these two players
The Arsenal midfielder is a big fan of Nigeria international Alex Iwobi
Mesut Ozil says Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi is a mix of Nigeria legend Jay-Jay Okocha and Ajax legend Edgar Davids.
The 20-year-old has made an impressive start to the Premier League season after a return of three assists in five top-flight games to help keep Arsene Wenger’s side on course for a title challenge.
Iwobi broke into the Arsenal first-team last term and the African playmaker scored against Everton and Watford to underline his promising potential at the Emirates Stadium.
The Nigeria international also produced a memorable performance in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat by Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.
Iwobi is the nephew of Bolton Wanderers and Nigeria playmaker Okocha, and Arsenal midfielder Ozil can see similarities between the pair, adding that his team-mate also reminds him of a former Tottenham midfielder.
“He reminds me of his uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha. He was a player I loved watching. Alex reminds me of a mixture of him and Edgar Davids. He’s really strong on the ball, also defensively, but he’s good in front of goal too,” Ozil told Arsenal’s website.
Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City.
The Gunners will host Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
