Michael Owen delivers verdict on Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal
Michael Owen insists that Alexis Sanchez is better suited to a role on the wing for Arsenal than up front
Michael Owen has insisted that Alexis Sanchez is better suited to playing on the wing than up front for Arsenal.
The Chile international has been deployed in a central striking role for the north London side for much of this season following Olivier Giroud’s lay-off due to injury.
Sanchez has been played on the left wing by Arsene Wenger for much of the Chilean’s start to his career in north London since his transfer to The Emirates from Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
The 27-year-old has earned plenty of praise for his performances up front for Arsenal this season, despite not being able to help the Gunners break down Middlesbrough at The Emirates on Saturday.
However, former Liverpool striker Owen does not believe that Sanchez is particularly suited to a central attacking role for the north London club.
Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday night, Owen said: “I don’t believe Alexis Sanchez is an out-and-out centre-forward.
“When you’re such a good player as Sanchez is, you’re going to be a success playing up front or on the left. So it doesn’t really matter.
“If he goes and scores a couple of goals like he has done, it doesn’t mean he is betting player as a centre-forward than in another position.
“If Arsenal want to go and win the Premier League or the Champions League, I think he’d better better suited playing on the left than up front.”
Sanchez is likely to be rested for Arsenal’s home League Cup clash against Reading on Tuesday night at The Emirates.
