Michael Owen delivers verdict on Arsenal duo ahead of Reading clash
Michael Owen comments on Olivier Giroud's form for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez's best position
Michael Owen believes that Arsenal may have to look for a new striker in forthcoming transfer windows after questioning whether Olivier Giroud is the right man for the job on a long-term basis.
The French striker is currently sidelined with an injury and has not featured for the Gunners since their opening-weekend defeat at the hands of Liverpool back in August.
Arsene Wenger has hinted that Giroud is closing in on a comeback and could be included in the Arsenal squad for Tuesday night’s League Cup clash against Reading at The Emirates.
In his absence, Alexis Sanchez has been starring in the central striking role for the Gunners and has been in good form so far this season.
However, former Liverpool star Owen believes that Sanchez’s best position is out wide, and feels that Giroud is not a long-term answer to Arsenal’s striker conundrum.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Owen said: “I think Olivier Giroud is a very good player. His goal-scoring record is quite good for Arsenal. Is he the answer long term? That’s questionable.
“I think Alexis’ best position is out wide.”
Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by Middlesbrough on Saturday.
