Michael Owen tells Jose Mourinho to start this player in Chelsea v Man United

The former Man United striker wants Jose Mourinho to give Michael Carrick his first Premier League start of the season

Michael Owen believes Michael Carrick deserves a starting spot for Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils were impressive 4-1 winners against Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night thanks to Paul Pogba’s brace and goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Carrick was handed just his third start of the 2016-17 season under new manager Jose Mourinho for the visit of the Turkish side at Old Trafford.

The veteran England midfielder hasn’t made Mourinho’s starting XI for a Premier League game so far this term.

However, former United striker Owen believes the Portuguese coach should consider handing Carrick a spot in his side for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.

“Michael Carrick was great [against Fenerbahce],” Owen told BT Sport on Thursday night.

“I am looking down the list of players who could be forcing themselves into the team on Sunday and he is the one standout player. He should have been playing more and he proved it on Thursday night.”

Carrick’s only Premier League appearance came in the final 12 minutes of their 4-1 win against defending champions Leicester City last month.
