Nathaniel Clyne: What has impressed me about this Liverpool signing

The Liverpool right-back heaps praise on summer signing Joel Matip

Nathaiel Clyne has hailed Joel Matip’s effortless transition into the Liverpool back four this season.

The Cameroon international was signed on a free transfer in the summer window after Liverpool agreed a deal in principle with the Schalke 04 defender in February.

Matip made his Premier League debut at White Hart Lane as the African helped Liverpool secure a 1-1 draw against the title rivals.

The 25-year-old has acquitted himself well alongside Liverpool centre-half partner Dejan Lovren despite coming up against some of the Premier League’s most-prolific goal-scorers in the shape of Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.

The Cameroonian defender played his play in Liverpool’s first clean sheet of the Premier League campaign on Monday night as he managed to tame Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a goalless draw at Anfield.

And Liverpool right-back Clyne has heaped praise on Matip’s contribution to Jurgen Klopp’s side so far this season.

“He’s done really well,” Clyne told The Liverpool Echo.

“He’s settled in like he’s been playing for Liverpool for a really long time. He’s built a good partnership and has done really well defensively.

“He’s confident on the ball, you see him driving forward from defence and helping to set up attacks. He’s good and I like playing with him.

“He is not fazed by anything. He is putting in good performances and long may they continue.”
