Nemanja Matic thanks Arsenal for Chelsea being in the title race

Chelsea got a wake-up call from their 3-0 loss to Arsenal last month, according to the midfielder

Nemanja Matic has thanked Arsenal for giving them the wake-up call needed to resurrect their Premier League title challenge this season.

The Blues were torn apart by the Gunners at The Emirates back in September as Arsene Wenger’s men secured a thumping 3-0 victory over their London rivals in the Premier League.

Chelsea have since rediscovered some winning form and have taken maximum points from their last three games – including Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

That result left Antonio Conte’s men in fourth place in the Premier League table and just one point behind leaders Manchester City after nine games this season.

And Matic believes that the disappointing result at The Emirates helped to fuel Chelsea’s desire to improve their performances.

Matic is quoted as saying by Metro: “You know, sometimes you need to lose the game to wake up.

“The Arsenal game was a wake-up call for us. We knew that we had to do better, to want more, and we did that.

“It’s easy to say we needed to work harder but after Arsenal we knew we had to show that we had quality, and we have done that in the last three games. We have shown quality, we don’t concede, and we score goals.

“I was thinking about [defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool] before the game. This was a moment to show we can compete with every team. I’m very happy because of that.

“Of course we don’t forget that we lost against Arsenal, against Liverpool. But of course the table shows that we are there, we are near. We will try and continue like this.”
