Neville: How Conte has transformed Chelsea

Phil Neville says Antonio Conte's tactical change has made a big difference at Chelsea

Phil Neville says Antonio Conte’s tactical switch has turned things around at Chelsea.

The Blues made an impressive start to his Chelsea career after successive victories over West Ham United, Watford and Burnley in their opening three games of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

However, the wheels started to come off for the Blues after a 2-2 draw at Swansea City was followed by successive losses to title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.

Conte switched to a 3-5-2 formation for Chelsea’s trip to the KCOM Stadium and the west London side were 2-0 winners against Hull City.

The Blues kept another clean sheet in a 3-0 win against defending champions Leicester City before Sunday’s outstanding 4-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side.

And Neville heaped praise on Conte for showing the courage to change his system ahead of Chelsea’s trip to West Ham in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

“What Chelsea have done recently is an example of why it is far too early to write United’s season off,” Neville told BBC Sport.

“After the first six games of the season, which saw them struggle defensively and lose to Liverpool and Arsenal, I was wondering what their new manager Antonio Conte was doing. His team looked like the same old Chelsea who struggled last year.

“But then Conte changed to the 3-5-2 formation that has brought him such success with Juventus and Italy, and they have not looked back.”

Chelsea are in fourth place in the Premier League table and a point behind leaders Manchester City after nine games.
