Sadio Mane has revealed that Jurgen Klopp is a long-term admirer of the striker after his transfer to Liverpool in the summer.

The forward moved to Anfield from Southampton in the summer transfer window and has already made a strong start to life at the Merseyside club.

The 24-year-old Senegal international has scored three goals and made one assist in six Premier League games for the Reds so far this term to help Klopp’s men make a strong start to the season.

Mane will be hoping to feature for Liverpool when the Reds take on bitter local rivals Manchester United in Monday night’s crunch Premier League clash at Anfield.

And the forward has revealed that Klopp tried to sign him when he was in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport, Mane said: “Before I came here, I had the chance to meet him when he was at Borussia Dortmund.

“I was at Red Bull Salzburg and he tried to sign me – but it didn’t happen and that is football. He is a good manager and he is someone who likes his players.

“At the end of last season, he called me and told me he wanted me to come to Liverpool.

“I said straight away that I want to come. It was the right time and right coach for me. I am very happy to be here.”
