Pat Nevin highlights Chelsea signing’s improvement under Antonio Conte
The former Chelsea winger has been impressed with David Luiz's measured performances
Pat Nevin says David Luiz looks like a much better defender under Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
The Brazil international was signed in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Luiz made his second Chelsea debut in a 2-1 loss to Liverpool before the Blues were soundly beaten 3-0 at Arsenal in the London derby in September.
However, the South American has been part of a Chelsea defence that has kept three successive clean sheets in the Premier League.
The west London side have managed to get their title bid back on track and are in fourth place just a point adrift of leaders Manchester City.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin has been very impressed with Luiz’s measured performances in a Chelsea back-three in recent weeks.
“David Luiz’s passing was quick and had zip. He did nothing fancy. He did nothing clever,” Nevin told Newstalk after Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Manchester United last weekend.
“He made one mistake for hitting somebody. Other than that, it was a crisp and sharp performance. That’s not the David Luiz we watched in the last time. He was far too slack.”
Chelsea will make the trip to in-form Southampton in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
The west London side have already beaten West Ham United, Watford, Burnley, Hull City, Leicester City and Manchester United this term.
