Pat Nevin makes bold prediction about Antonio Conte and Chelsea
The former Chelsea winger runs the rule over Antonio Conte's defence
Pat Nevin doesn’t believe Antonio Conte will play a back three in Chelsea’s next Premier League game against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues manager started with an orthodox four-man defence in his opening five top-flight games in charge of the west London side which led to a yield of 10 points from a possible 15.
Conte switched to three centre-halves during the second of Chelsea’s emphatic 3-0 loss to bitter north London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last month.
The Italian manager started with his trademark three centre-halves at the back for Saturday’s trip to the KCOM Stadium and the tactical move paid dividends after a 2-0 victory.
However, former Chelsea winger Nevin is adamant that Conte would prefer to avoid a three-man defence and doesn’t expect the Blues head coach to persist with the formation for the visit of the Premier League champions Leicester at the Stamford Bridge on 15 October.
“He [Conte] will play a back three again this season. But I don’t think he’ll play it next week at home to Leicester, or at home to Manchester United,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
Chelsea finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
