Pat Nevin: New Chelsea signing reminds me of Branislav Ivanovic
The Chelsea legend admits Marcos Alonso has proven him wrong in recent Premier League games
Pat Nevin says Chelsea summer signing Marcos Alonso reminds him of a young Branislav Ivanovic.
The Spanish full-back impressed in Antonio Conte’s side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon as Chelsea eased to a 3-0 win against defending Premier League champions Leicester City.
Alonso was signed in a £19m deal from Serie A outfit Fiorentina in the final week of the summer transfer window as Conte bolstered his defensive options.
The 25-year-old made his Chelsea debut in a 3-0 loss to Arsenal before he started his first Premier League game as a Blues player in a 2-0 win at Hull City.
While Nevin admits initial doubts over Chelsea’s deal to sign the former Real Madrid full-back, the Chelsea legend says Alonso has convinced him of his talents in recent weeks.
“Alonso didn’t play left back – he played left wing-back,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball podcast.
“He looked like Branislav Ivanovic 10 years ago but on the left-hand side. He had power and pace. Even Riyad Mahrez didn’t get near him when he came on.
“It is one hell of an improved player. I thought he was a panic buy when Chelsea bought him but he fits in.”
Chelsea will host Manchester United in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
The west London side will host Jose Mourinho’s side for the first time since the Portuguese coach was sacked in December.
