Pat Nevin: Why Chelsea and Liverpool have big advantage in title race
The former Chelsea midfielder says a lack of European football gives the Premier League pair a clear advantage
Chelsea and Liverpool have a big advantage in the Premier League title race, according to Pat Nevin.
Both of the Premier League clubs failed to qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League this season following disappointing 2015-16 campaigns.
Liverpool have already capitalised on their lack of European football with impressive victories over Arsenal, Leicester City and Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side.
The Blues won their opening three Premier League games before defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal, although the west London side have returned to winning ways in recent weeks.
Former Chelsea midfielder Nevin believes a lack of European football gives Chelsea and Liverpool a clear advantage in the Premier League title race.
“There are a couple of teams that have a wee bit of an advantage – particularly, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool,” Nevin told Newstalk.
“If you’re not in Champions League football, you’ve got a big advantage. It’s going to be a big advantage this season because it’s going to be so tight. If it gives you an extra four or five points that could be enough to win you the league.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season after a disappointing defence of their top-flight crown.
Liverpool ended up in eighth spot after Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the Anfield helm in October 2015.
The Reds were 2-1 winners against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this season thanks to goals from Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson.
