Paul Ince issues title warning to Man United ahead of Chelsea clash
The Manchester United legend explains why Jose Mourinho's side need to beat Chelsea on Sunday afternoon
Paul Ince has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United need to win at Chelsea if the Red Devils harbour Premier League title ambitions.
The Red Devils are in seventh place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal after eight top-flight games.
United haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of the Red Devils in 2013 – both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal have failed to win the top-flight crown.
Unlike his predecessors, Mourinho does have Premier League title-winning pedigree after the 53-year-old guided Chelsea to the top-flight glory in 2005, 2006 and 2015.
However, former United midfielder Ince believes potential champions would be able to go to Stamford Bridge and beat Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side on Sunday afternoon.
“These United players have to believe they have a good chance of winning on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea aren’t quite there yet. This isn’t a side firing on all cylinders,” Ince wrote in his Paddy Power blog.
“If you’ve got aspirations of being in the Champions League and competing for the title, you have to go to sides like Chelsea and win away from home. A draw does nothing for either team – it just allows Manchester City and others to pull away. You have to go there and win, rather than take a point.
“It’s still early in the season but United could be eight points behind City with a draw against Chelsea and it’s a big ask to claw that back.”
Chelsea are in fifth place in the Premier League table and three points behind leaders Manchester City.
United are a further two points adrift of Conte’s Blues side ahead of Sunday’s clash at Stamford Bridge.
