Paul Ince: Why Man United’s Jose Mourinho should get good Chelsea reception

The Manchester United legend says Jose Mourinho deserves to get a warm reception at Stamford Bridge

Paul Ince has urged Chelsea supporters to give Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho a warm reception on his return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after the 20-time English champions finished in fifth place in the Premier League last term.

The 53-year-old was sacked by Chelsea in December after the west London side made a dismal start to the defence of their Premier League crown last season.

Mourinho’s United side are in seventh spot in the table after Monday night’s goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.

Former United midfielder Ince believes Mourinho deserves a good welcome at Stamford Bridge after two spells in charge that produced four Premier League titles, three League Cups and the FA Cup.

“You have to remember how much Jose Mourinho achieved at Chelsea,” Ince wrote in his Paddy Power blog.

“There will be a minority who will give him plenty of abuse on Sunday afternoon, but it’ll be disappointing if he isn’t given a really good welcome. He brought lots of silverware to the club including three league titles.

“They need to draw a line through his departure last year and remember the success and domination he brought to the club. Chelsea fans gave Claudio Ranieri a fantastic reception when he arrived with Leicester last season, and it should be the same for Jose.

“The fans idolised him a few years ago and that relationship won’t just be forgotten quickly.”

Chelsea appointed Antonio Conte as their permanent manager earlier this year after Guus Hiddink guided the west London outfit to a tenth place finish following his appointment as Mourinho’s interim replacement.
