Paul Merson defends Jose Mourinho over Man United tactics at Liverpool
The Arsenal legend defends Jose Mourinho's approach in Monday night's stalemate between Liverpool and Man United
Paul Merson has defended Jose Mourinho’s tactics at Anfield after Manchester United’s goalless draw with Liverpool on Monday night.
The Red Devils failed to register a shot on target in their north-west derby on Merseyside as United successfully managed to tame Liverpool’s in-form attacking line-up.
The visitors finished with just 35 per cent possession but the 20-time English champions managed to prevent Liverpool from scoring for just the second time this season.
United are in seventh place in the Premier League table and five points behind leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal after eight games.
Mourinho will return to his former club Chelsea on Saturday afternoon as United look to return to winning ways following back-to-back stalemates with Stoke City and Liverpool.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson has launched a defence of Mourinho after the United manager’s conservative approach to Monday night’s fixture.
Merson told Sky Sports: “People had a go at United on Monday. What do you expect? They got a point. This is not the Manchester United of the 1990s, this is the Manchester United of now. It’s not that football has changed, it’s that the team isn’t good enough.”
United haven’t won a Premier League game since a 4-1 win against defending champions Leicester City at Old Trafford last month.
