Paul Merson makes bold claim about Tottenham in title race
The Arsenal legend expects Tottenham's title rivals to replicate their approach against Man City
Paul Merson has tipped Tottenham Hotspur’s title rivals to replicate their approach to last weekend’s 2-0 win against Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side hadn’t dropped a point in their opening six Premier League games and were four points clear at the top of the table.
The Eastlands outfit were 2-1 winners against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United during that run as the Red Devils struggled to compete at Old Trafford.
However, Tottenham also had a good start to the season to protect after four victories and two stalemates in six Premier League assignments.
Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal and Dele Alli’s close-range finish secured three points for the north London side in a 2-0 win against the Citizens.
However, Arsenal legend Merson believes Tottenham’s title rivals will look to replicate their high press against Guardiola’s side following their emphatic win at White Hart Lane.
“I fancied Spurs to get something and they thoroughly deserved it. They were outstanding,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“The title race is wide open again because I think other teams will look at that and try to copy what Spurs did. You can’t let City roll it out and play from the back.
“You have got to press them high. They will keep on playing, take chances and lose it, and they will get punished.
“This isn’t Spain where you can get away with it. The tempo is higher. Teams will look at City now and they won’t fear them quite as much.”
Tottenham are in second place and a point behind Premier League leaders City.
The Lilywhites will make the trip to West Bromwich Albion in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday 15 October.
