Paul Merson makes bold prediction about Chelsea and Premier League title

Paul Merson rules out Chelsea as Premier League title contenders this season

Paul Merson says he would be shocked if Chelsea won the Premier League title this season.

Antonio Conte’s side ended a three-game winless run in their final Premier League game ahead of the international break thanks to a 2-0 win against Hull City courtesy of goals from Willian and Diego Costa.

Chelsea won their opening three top-flight games thanks to victories over London rivals West Ham United and Watford before a 3-0 win against Sean Dyche’s Burnley side at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Blues dropped their first points under the Italian coach at the Liberty Stadium after struggling Swansea City managed to secure a point against the west London side.

Conte’s side suffered their first defeat of the season in September when goals from Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson sealed a 2-1 win for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

A week later, Arsenal were emphatic 3-0 winners against their London rivals at the Emirates Stadium before Chelsea’s victory at the KCOM Stadium ahead of the international break.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t believe Chelsea can win the Premier League title despite being just five points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

“I wouldn’t say a win puts Chelsea back in the title hunt, I have seen plenty of them this season and I’d be shocked if they won the league from this position. But it could get them back in the race for Champions League qualification,” Merson told Sky Sports.
