Paul Merson makes bold prediction about Man United and top four
The former Arsenal midfielder runs the rule over Manchester United's prospects of a top-four finish
Manchester United will struggle to finish in the Premier League’s top four, according to Paul Merson.
The Red Devils squandered a leading position to draw 1-1 with Stoke City at Old Trafford last weekend and leave Jose Mourinho’s side off the pace in sixth place in the Premier League table.
Anthony Martial broke the deadlock against the Potters with a superb strike after coming off the substitutes’ bench but David De Gea’s rare error led to Joe Allen’s equaliser.
United are already six points behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City and three points adrift of Liverpool, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes United will struggle to finish in fourth place this season if Mourinho’s side continue with their inconsistent form.
“Manchester United are going to struggle to finish in the top four at the rate they’re going,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“I’m not sure they are Champions League material. They should have blown Stoke away in the first 20 minutes last Sunday.
“But after that I’m not sure they looked like scoring.”
The Red Devils have beaten Bournemouth, Southampton, Hull City and reigning champions Leicester City so far this season.
United have suffered defeats by City and Watford, while Stoke secured a point against the 20-time English champions last weekend.
