Paul Merson says this player must start for Man United at Liverpool
Paul Merson discusses Wayne Rooney's situation at Manchester United ahead of Monday's clash with Liverpool
Paul Merson has urged Jose Mourinho to start Wayne Rooney for Monday night’s crunch Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.
The striker’s situation has been under the spotlight in recent weeks after struggling to hold down a starting spot for both club and country.
England skipper Rooney was dropped to the bench for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia, with Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson taking the armband from the Manchester United man.
There has been much debate about Rooney’s best position as he reaches the twilight years of his career and develops his game.
However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that Rooney would be a good option for Mourinho for Monday night’s clash because he will have a point to prove.
Writing in his column for The Daily Star, Merson said: “When you’re his age, you’re not going to play every week, and he was always someone who played in every game, however fit he was.
“Now he’s going to be in and out. He’s just at that stage of his career. He’s played a lot football. But he can still play.
“I would start him against Liverpool. Look at the United team and it doesn’t frighten you. It’s stronger with him in it.
“Also, he’ll be fresh. Jesse Lingard has just played back-to-back games for England. That’s mentally tiring when you’re making your debut.
“For me, Rooney will be fresher. And he’ll be dying to get out there. He loves these games and he’s played well in plenty of them over the years.
“Playing him also takes the spotlight off Paul Pogba, because people will be asking questions about him again if he doesn’t show up in a game this big.”
Manchester United head into Monday’s game looking to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Stoke City before the international break.
