Paul Merson tells Jose Mourinho to start Man United signing

The Arsenal legend believes Henrikh Mkhitaryan can add some X Factor to Jose Mourinho's struggling Man United side

Paul Merson believes Henrikh Mkhitaryan can add a sprinkle of X Factor to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side.

The Red Devils have failed to win their last three Premier League games to leave United in seventh place and six points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

United drew 1-1 with Stoke City at Old Trafford before the Red Devils battled to a goalless stalemate with title rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

However, Mourinho’s defence collapsed at Stamford Bridge last weekend as the 20-time English champions lost 4-0 to their manager’s former employers Chelsea.

Mkhitaryan has started a Premier League game since a 2-1 loss to Pep Guardialo’s Manchester City side on 10 September, lasting a mere 45 minutes of the derby.

The Armenia international is available for selection after a spell on the sidelines with a mystery injury problem.

Former Arsenal playmaker Merson believes the former Borussia Dortmund star could be the man to reignite United.

“I think he needs to get Henrikh Mkhitaryan fit and in the team. He’s got the X Factor and they need to get him playing,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It’s a really strange one. Mourinho said he needs match fitness, so why didn’t he give him 30 minutes against Fenerbahce? He is their best player.”
