Paul Merson: This is my only worry for Tottenham

The Arsenal legend reveals what will be the biggest test for Tottenham Hotspur this season

Paul Merson has questioned whether Tottenham Hotspur will be able to maintain their impressive performances up until next May.

The Lilywhites were 2-0 winners against Premier League leaders Manchester City last weekend thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal before Dele Alli netted his first Premier League goal of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are the only Premier League club not to lose a game in the 2016-17 campaign ahead of their trip to West Bromwich Albion in their next top-flight outing next Saturday.

Tottenham challenged Leicester City for most of the 2015-16 season before a four-game winless run saw the north London club relegated to third position behind the champions and Arsenal.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson has questioned whether Tottenham can maintain such a high level throughout the 2016-17 season after an emphatic win against Pep Guardiola’s title favourites.

“The only worry for Spurs is whether they can do what they’re doing now next May. Mauricio Pochettino’s teams always fade at the end of the season,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

“OK, it didn’t happen until right at the end of last season. But it’s so physically demanding trying to play a pressing game all season.

“That will be the test for them.”

Tottenham are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind current leaders City after seven top-flight games.
