Paul Merson: This Man United signing is really struggling in Premier League
The Arsenal legend says Paul Pogba is struggling to make the step up to the Premier League
Paul Merson believes Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba is struggling to adapt to the Premier League.
The France international completed a return to Old Trafford in August after United agreed a world-record £89m transfer fee with Serie A giants Juventus.
Pogba won four successive titles in the Italian top flight following his £800,000 switch to Turin from the 20-time English champions under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012.
However, the world-record signing has struggled to recreate his eye-catching Juventus form in a United shirt after a below-par start to the 2016-17 season.
Pogba opened his account at the fifth attempt after the France midfielder scored United’s fourth goal in a 4-1 win against defending champions Leicester City last month.
The 22-year-old netted twice in United’s 4-1 win against Turkish side Fenerbahce in the Europa League earlier this month before a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
However, Pogba struggled up against compatriot N’Golo Kante on Sunday afternoon as Chelsea were 4-0 winners against Jose Mourinho’s side.
And Merson delivered his blunt verdict on the France international.
“Pogba scored two versus Fenerbahce but where was he on Sunday? Those are the games you pay the big money for,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“It will take time. He’s played in a league where his team was so far ahead of the rest it was a joke. He played in a role where didn’t have to do any defensive work and he’s struggling to adapt.”
