Paul Merson: Why Tottenham have impressed me
The former Arsenal midfiedler has been impressed with how Tottenham Hotspur have coped without Harry Kane
Paul Merson says he has been impressed with how Tottenham Hotspur have coped without injured striker Harry Kane.
The England international has missed the north London side’s last four games in all competitions after the Tottenham striker suffered an ankle injury during a 1-0 win against Sunderland last month.
The 23-year-old centre-forward finished as the Lilywhites’ top goal-scorer in the Premier League last season after a return of 25 goals in 37 games in the 2016-17 top-flight campaign.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have scored 10 goals since Kane’s injury blow and have recorded successive Premier League victories and their first Champions League win of the season.
Spurs were 2-0 winners against leaders Manchester City in their last Premier League game ahead of the international break as Pep Guardiola suffered his first defeat as Citizens boss.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson says he has been impressed with Tottenham’s performances without Kane ahead of the trip to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.
“If Harry Kane got injured last season you couldn’t see Spurs winning a game for toffee. Now it seems like nothing has changed despite his absence, which is a massive compliment to the other players,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Tottenham are in second place in the Premier League table.
