Paul Merson: Why Jose Mourinho should drop new Man United signing
Paul Merson hasn't been impressed with Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in recent weeks
Paul Merson says Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should drop Zlatan Ibrahimovic in favour of Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils signed the 35-year-old centre-forward in a free transfer from Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Ibrahimovic made a promising start to his United career after the towering striker scored four times in his opening four games in all competitions.
However, the former Barcelona and Juventus striker hasn’t found the back of the net in the Premier League since his goal in the Manchester derby on 10 September.
United are without a win in their last three Premier League games following stalemates with Stoke City and Liverpool followed by a 4-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Mourinho needs to give the former Sweden international a rest and start with England teenager Rashford in the coming games.
“Ibrahimovic used to be world class but he’s 35. He used to be in the top three or four players in the world but he’s not the same player anymore. Even Lionel Messi won’t be world class when he’s 35,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He can’t play twice a week either now, which we saw on Sunday. He played Thursday and Sunday and he didn’t get a kick.”
Merson added: “Ibrahimovic isn’t going to run away from anybody and I’d say put Marcus Rashford in there instead as the leading striker to give you that movement. Rashford’s 19, though – they shouldn’t be relying on him.”
United will host Sean Dyche’s promoted side Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
