Per Mertesacker opens up on Mesut Ozil’s start to the season at Arsenal
Per Mertesacker has been very impressed by Mesut Ozil's displays for Arsenal this season
Per Mertesacker has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil for the strong start he has made to the season with Arsenal.
The Germany playmaker has earned plenty of praise in recent weeks after producing some scintillating attacking displays for Arsene Wenger’s men.
Ozil was in fine form on Wednesday night when he scored his first career hat-trick by netting three times in the second half of the 6-0 win over Ludogorets in the Champions League at The Emirates.
The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s top playmakers and has developed into a key player for Arsenal since his arrival at the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
And Mertesacker believes that Ozil has been benefitting from Arsenal’s impressive team performances in recent weeks.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website ahead of Saturday’s game with Middlesbrough, Mertesacker said: “At the moment, everything seems to be coming together for him. Look at him on Wednesday night, he assisted one and then scored three. This is a reward for all of Mesut’s work and patience.
“He’s hungry, he wants success and he wants to push himself. He’s showing now that he can score, that he can help lead the team.
“He’s been vital for us this season and he can make the difference at any second. He wants to lead this club to success, and I’m very happy with his recent performances.
“Mesut is benefiting from the strength of our team cohesion. We want to be dangerous, to be a threat in every single position.”
Ozil is likely to be rested for Arsenal’s League Cup tie against Reading on Tuesday night at The Emirates.
