The Spaniard has been a regular fixture in the Red Devils team since joining United from Chelsea in January 2014 after being deemed to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge by Jose Mourinho.

Mata is now working with Mourinho once again following the Portuguese coach’s appointment as the club’s new manager back in the summer.

And the playmaker has been in impressive form so far this season, scoring two goals and making one assist in the Premier League.

The Spaniard also scored the winner for the Red Devils in their EFL Cup fourth-round victory over bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

And former United defender Neville feels that Mata deserves more praise for the positive impact he has had since his arrival at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Wednesday’s game, Neville said: “He’s never injured. He assists goals a lot. He plays in two or three different positions, he scores important goals…

“I thought he would be the first one to go when Jose came but he’s actually becoming one of their most important players.”
