Phil Neville: What Michael Carrick can bring to Man United
The former Manchester United defender wants to see Michael Carrick get some more game time
Phil Neville has singled out Michael Carrick as the Manchester United player to bring balance to Jose Mourinho’s side.
The England international has been handed a watching brief for the majority of Jose Mourinho’s reign so far after the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
United record signing Paul Pogba has struggled in Mourinho’s side since his move to Old Trafford despite the Red Devils boss partnering the France international with Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.
However, former United defender Neville believes veteran midfielder Carrick would be a calming influence on the Red Devils side.
“The team has been crying out for him. He played against Northampton and he had played a couple of Europa League games as well,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“If you’re going to bring the best out of this Manchester United team and in particular Paul Pogba, I think Michael Carrick could have the calming influence. He can put his foot on the ball and he can control the tempo.”
United are in seventh place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of leaders Manchester City after nine top-flight games.
The Red Devils lost 4-0 to Chelsea in their most-recent Premier League fixture after goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante.
Mourinho’s side will host Sean Dyche’s Burnley side at Old Trafford this weekend.
