Phil Thompson issues advice to Liverpool striker ahead of West Brom clash

Phil Thompson says Daniel Sturridge must find consistency with Liverpool this season

Phil Thompson has told Daniel Sturridge that he needs to show the consistency needed to become a regular starter in the Liverpool side this season.

The England international has had to settle for a bit-part role in the Liverpool first team this season as Jurgen Klopp embarks on his first full campaign in charge at Anfield.

Sturridge has only started four Premier League games so far this season and has seen his first-team opportunities limited.

The 27-year-old is widely considered to be Liverpool’s most potent threat in front of goal, but it appears that he is not first choice under new boss Jurgen Klopp.

And former Liverpool star Thompson feels that Sturridge has plenty of work to do if he is to force his way back into the side on a regular basis this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United on Monday, Thompson said: “When everybody is fit, I think the team looks better without Sturridge at the moment.

“I think Daniel needs to find a level of consistency in the side to be prove himself as the No. 1 striker again. He’s flickered in and out for the side, not being a regular.

“In fairness to him he showed a fantastic attitude, shaking everyone’s hand, which might not have been the case a few years ago.

“He doesn’t seem to trust his body to go at full pace. Daniel used to be able to really cover the ground with 25-30 yard sprints, so I don’t know whether he’s not trusting his body.

“It will help him convince himself he can trust his body once he has a long time injury free.”
