John Terry and Wayne Rooney may be Premier League rivals but the Chelsea captain has launched an impassioned defence of the Manchester United striker.

The 30-year-old has been heavily criticised in the 2016-17 season so far and interim England manager Gareth Southgate opted against naming Rooney in his starting XI for Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw against Slovenia in their 2018 World Cup qualifier.

At club level, Jose Mourinho dropped Rooney to the bench for their 4-1 win against reigning Premier League champions Leicester City at Old Trafford, before the second-highest United goal-scorer of all-time came off the bench to tee up Anthony Martial in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City ahead of the international break.

Chelsea captain Terry, who has been written off at different points in his career but remains a key player for the west London side, posted the above photo on his Instagram page before writing a passionate defence of his former England team-mate.

“Wayne Rooney. England’s highest record goalscorer in the history of our game. Soon to be the most capped player our great country has ever produced.

“One of the very best players I have seen and had the pleasure playing with in my lifetime and a man who has given everything for England.

“An absolute LEGEND at Everton,Man United,England and world football.

“We should all show more respect to this great player and man.

“Let’s all get behind Wayne and the England team tomorrow. @waynerooney ⚽️”
