Riyad Mahrez comments on Arsenal transfer talk
Riyad Mahrez confirms that Arsenal tried to sign him in the summer transfer window but Leicester were unwilling to sell
Riyad Mahrez has confirmed that Arsenal made an approach to sign him in the summer transfer window.
The north London side were heavily linked with a number of players during the summer and failed in their bid to lure Leicester striker Jamie Vardy to The Emirates early on in the transfer window.
Arsenal were also rumoured to be interested in bringing Vardy’s Leicester team-mate Mahrez to north London but a move failed to materialise before the transfer window close last month.
Now, Mahrez has lifted the lid on the circumstances around Arsenal’s approach as he gave his take on how the summer dealing unfolded.
Speaking in an interview with Canal Football Club, as quoted by Sky Sports, Mahrez said: “There was contact with Arsenal.
“But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive.
“I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in.
“Personally, I think it is a good thing I stayed put. It’s now up to me to prove myself again.”
Mahrez was a key player for Leicester last season as the Foxes won the Premier League title, with the Algeria international voted as the PFA player of the year.
Arsenal take on Swansea in the Premier League at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
