Roy Keane delivers verdict on Mesut Ozil and Arsenal contract
The former Manchester United captain says Arsenal need to secure the future of their prized asset Mesut Ozil
Roy Keane says it is vital that Arsenal secure Mesut Ozil’s long-term future at The Emirates.
The Germany international scored his first Champions League hat-trick on Wednesday night as Arsenal eased to an emphatic 6-0 win against Ludogorets at the Emirates Stadium.
Ozil has made a bright start to the 2016-17 season despite being overshadowed by the form of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott in the opening months.
The World Cup winner is reported to be in negotiations with the Gunners over a new £250,000-a-week contract – Ozil’s current £140,000-a-week deal expires in the summer of 2018.
Former Manchester United captain Keane, who won the Champions League with the Red Devils in 1999, believes Ozil is crucial to Wenger’s plans for the north London side.
“Trying to get Mesut Ozil signed up is vital for the club,” Keane told ITV Sport.
“I think what will help him will be winning trophies – and the big trophies like the Champions League and the Premier League.
“They look a bit short. But Arsenal, as a club to go onto the next level over the next few years, have to Ozil and Sanchez signed up.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a club-record £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013.
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table but level on points with current leaders Manchester City.
The Gunners will host Middlesbrough in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
