Ryan Giggs: This is what Liverpool lack in Premier League title race
Ryan Giggs says Liverpool lack an out-and-out goal-scorer in their squad this season
Ryan Giggs says Liverpool’s lack of a goal-scorer could count against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Premier League title race.
Liverpool are the Premier League’s leading goal-scorers alongside Manchester City despite Klopp starting with Roberto Firmino ahead of Daniel Sturridge for most of their top-flight games.
The Reds scored 20 times in their opening nine Premier League fixtures ahead of this weekend’s clash at Crystal Palace – James Milner, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho have all scored four times.
The 18-time English champions have never won the Premier League title despite finishing in second place twice under Rafael Benitiez in 2009 and under Brendan Rodgers in 2014.
Former Manchester United midfielder Giggs, who won the Premier League a staggering 13 times as a player, explained what could prove Liverpool’s downfaill in this season’s title race.
“What they lack is a goalscorer who might get them 20 goals in a season and while Sadio Mane or Daniel Sturridge might prove me wrong, you do need one of those in a title-winning team,” Giggs wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.
“All the recent champions have had one: Jamie Vardy, Diego Costa, Yaya Toure (who scored 20 goals in 2013-2014, although Sergio Aguero is Manchester City’s key striker), Robin Van Persie. At the other end I do not think they have a goalkeeper who is among the top players in that position in the league, although that could change over time.”
Sturridge scored 21 times in Liverpool’s title push in 2013-14 but the England international is still waiting for his first Premier League goal this term.
Klopp was appointed as Rodgers successor back in October 2015.
