The Brazil international has started ahead of Sturridge in four of Liverpool’s eight Premier League games in the 2016-17 season so far.
However, Jurgen Klopp played Sturridge in his favoured centre-forward role for the visit of Manchester United at Anfield on Monday night.
The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker lasted 60 minutes before he was replaced by Adam Lallana and Firmino was shuffled up front.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s goalless draw with his former club United, Giggs explained why Sturridge is struggling to get into the Liverpool team on a regular basis.
“He’s as good as anyone [in the box]. He can go either side, he can shoot quickly, he can take you on… but what lets him down is that he’s not as reliable defensively as Firmino,” Giggs told Sky Sports on Monday night.
Only Sergio Aguero has a better goals-to-minute ratio than Sturridge in the Premier League – the Liverpool forward has found the back of the net every 125 minutes during his Anfield career.
Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has netted three times in seven Premier League games so far this season. Sturridge, on the other hand, is still waiting to opening his Premier League account this term.
