Serie A clubs wanted to sign Man United defender, says agent
Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has attracted interest from Italy, says his agent
Matteo Darmian could be forced to look at his options in the Janaury transfer window unless the full-back gets more game time at Manchester United, according to the Italian’s agent.
The 26-year-old is still waiting to make his first Premier League appearance under new manager Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
The former Netherlands head coach signed Darmian in a reported £11.5m deal from Serie A outfit Torino in the 2015 summer transfer window and the Italian defender went on to score one goal in 39 appearances in all competitions in the 2015-16 season.
However, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia have made the full-back spots their own under Mourinho to leave Darmian facing an uphill battle to get back into starting line-up.
His agent Fausto Pari hinted that Darmian could be forced to leave United in the January transfer window.
“If the situation doesn’t change by January, we’ll have to think of something. He risks losing his place in the Italian national team,” Pari is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“We’ve got to see what United want to do. Italian clubs have tried to sign him but United closed the door immediately.”
Darmian has scored one goal in 46 appearances for the Italian national team.
United are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
