Stan Collymore: I was wrong about this Liverpool midfielder

The former Liverpool centre-forward has been impressed with the performances of Jordan Henderson this season

Stan Collymore has admitted that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has proven the club’s former striker wrong this season.

The ex Sunderland midfielder stepped out of the shadow of Steven Gerrard at the start of the 2015-16 after Brendan Rodgers named Henderson as the new Liverpool captain.

The Northern Irishman’s successor Jurgen Klopp stuck with Henderson as the club’s skipper and the England midfielder led Liverpool to finals in the League Cup and Europa League last season.

The 26-year-old has excelled in a defensive-midfield role so far this season, while the Liverpool skipper scored a superb wonder goal in a 2-1 victory at Chelsea in September.

Former Liverpool striker Collymore underlined Henderson’s improvement over the past 12 months.

“I have to give Jordan Henderson great credit,” Collymore told BBC Radio Five Live’s 606 show.

“I was one of the pundits who wrote is this guy good enough for Liverpool. He has manned up. He has stepped up to the plate. He has been a good captain for his club.”

Henderson moved to Liverpool from Sunderland in a £20m deal in 2011.

The Reds midfielder has scored 23 times in 221 appearances in all competitions over the past six seasons at the Anfield outfit.
