Stan Collymore makes bold claim about Mesut Ozil at Arsenal

Stan Collymore does not feel that Mesut Ozil has yet proved himself to be world class at Arsenal

Stan Collymore says Mesut Ozil needs to perform in the big games for Arsenal if he is to prove himself as a world-class player.

The Germany international earned plenty of praise on Wednesday night after he scored a second-half hat-trick to help Arsenal record a thumping 6-0 victory over Ludogorets in the Champions League.

Ozil has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers since arriving in the Premier League from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

However, former Liverpool man Collymore says he will only fully back the playmaker’s ability if he is able to consistently deliver on the big stage for the Gunners.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mirror, Collymore said: “For me, Ozil epitomises what Arsenal have become — flat-track bullies.

“They are capable of dispatching the likes of Ludogorets with ease. And Ozil will star in such matches.

“But when it comes to the crunch – really big games that decide titles or make sure the Gunners progress in the Champions League against the likes of Bayern Munich – he is found wanting.

“And until that changes, until Ozil proves he can play his part in an Arsenal team that can defeat the very best, you cannot put him into that world-class bracket.”

Arsenal return to League Cup action on Tuesday night with a home fourth-round clash against Reading at The Emirates.
