Stan Collymore: These are my doubts about Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil
The former Liverpool striker questions whether Mesut Ozil can be a talismanic figure for Arsenal
Stan Collymore has questioned whether Mesut Ozil is able to drive Arsenal to victories after Saturday night’s goalless draw with Middlesbrough.
The Germany international has been in impressive form in recent weeks following a return of three goals in seven Premier League appearances ahead of the visit of Boro.
Ozil scored his first Arsenal hat-trick on Wednesday night as the club-record signing netted three goals in the second half of their 6-0 win against Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Champions League.
However, the £42.5m signing couldn’t find the back of the net against the promoted side as Arsene Wenger’s side dropped points in the Premier League title race.
And former Liverpool striker Collymore remains unsure whether Ozil is able to be a talismanic figure in the Arsenal side like Argentina legend Diego Maradona.
“I think he’s a world class talent but does he have the personality in games like today to puff his chest out, Maradona-style, and say ‘I’m gonna win the game’?” Collymore told BBC Sport on Saturday night.
Arsenal haven’t lost a Premier League game since a 4-3 defeat by title rivals Liverpool in their opening fixture of the 2016-17 season.
The Gunners will make the trip to the Premier League’s basement club Sunderland in their next top-flight game on Saturday 29 October.
