Steve McManaman: Arsene Wenger should have made this Arsenal signing

The Liverpool legend believes Arsenal should have signed a world-class goal-scorer in the summer transfer window

Steve McManaman has criticised Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for failing to sign a world-class striker this summer.

The Gunners played out a goalless draw with promoted side Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon as Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott failed to make the breakthrough at The Emirates.

In fact, Arsenal number one Petr Cech was the busier of the two goalkeepers after the former Chelsea man made four saves to secure a points for the home side.

Wenger signed Lucas Perez in a £17m deal from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer transfer window but the uncapped Spanish forward has started just one Premier League game.

France international Olivier Giroud was sidelined on Saturday afternoon as Sanchez failed to recreate his prolific form in recent weeks.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid legend McManaman criticised Wenger for not recruiting a proven world-class striker in the summer to fire Arsenal to Premier League title glory.

“At the start of every season we discuss Arsenal’s transfer policy,” McManaman told BT Sport.

“I’ve said for years that I thought they should get a better centre-forward. They’ve brought in Lucas Perez but has hasn’t been playing.

“Olivier Giroud is injured. Alexis Sanchez has done well but I still don’t think it’s good enough.

“I think they should have bought a super-star centre-forward.”
