Steve McManaman: Why Liverpool owners vindicated over Jurgen Klopp

Steve McManaman hails Jurgen Klopp's impact at Liverpool

Steve McManaman believes the Liverpool owners have been vindicated over their decision to sack Brendan Rodgers and appoint Jurgen Klopp.

The Northern Irish was sacked in October 2015 after a disappointing start to the season just 18 months after the Reds almost won their first Premier League title.

Klopp guided Liverpool to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League table in a season which saw impressive wins at Chelsea and Manchester City.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager led the Merseyside club to two cup finals but the 18-time English champions lost to City on penalties in the League Cup and suffered a 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League.

However, Liverpool have started the 2016-17 Premier League campaign in scintillating form thanks to a run of six victories in their opening nine games.

Former Reds skipper McManaman paid credit to the Liverpool owners for appointing Klopp as Rodgers’ replacement.

“It’s been a wonderful first year,” McManaman told BT Sport on Saturday night.

“The owners will be vindicated they made the change when they did. Two cup finals albeit they lost both but they had a taste of reaching the finals.

“However, they got the taste of reaching European finals and now they’re joint top albeit Manchester City are ready to usurp them. The way they’re playing football is the most important thing for Liverpool. They need to play entertaining, high energy football and we’re getting that.”
