Three reasons why Liverpool will beat Man United
Kieran Beckles discusses three reasons why Liverpool should beat Manchester United at Anfield on Monday night
Liverpool are the form team
Liverpool are the form team after four successive Premier League victories. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been particularly impressive in their wins against their direct rivals for a top-four finish – Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City. It is worth remembering that Liverpool are one of just two sides to take a point off unbeaten Tottenham Hotspur this season, too. Manchester United, on the other hand, have been in stuttering form in recent months. Jose Mourinho’s men eased to three successive Premier League wins to start the season. However, the Red Devils have earned just four points from a possible 12 in their subsequent games.
Europa League boost
The 18-time English champions won their first European meeting the Europa League last 16 in the 2015-16 season – triumphing 2-0 at Anfield before a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. The Reds were deserved winners over two legs, leaving United legend Paul Scholes notably dejected during BT Sport’s coverage. Liverpool will have nothing to fear following their European success.
The Klopp factor
Mourinho still looks glum despite landing his dream job and ending his Chelsea nightmare. The United manager still doesn’t know his best team either. Will the Portuguese coach go with Ander Herrera alongside Paul Pogba or adopt a more negative approach and start Marouane Fellaini? Klopp, though, has the Liverpool squad and Anfield supporters pulling in the same direction. Their home games are magical on big Premier League and European nights and the former Borussia Dortmund manager has already overseen some famous victories under the floodlights (such as a 4-3 win against his old employers in the Europa League last term). Mourinho’s return to Anfield as United manager will only serve to intensify the atmosphere, too.
